Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

This morning there was a flurry of cash changing hands. My daughters wanted to take a friend out for lunch to celebrate her birthday, so John handed them a couple of bills. Zack too was planning to go out with friends, as a fling before spring break, but was short of funds. John handed him a ten and put away his depleted wallet.

"When I was their age I could buy lunch with a dollar," he mused. "And when Lukas was their age we could get a tostada at Taco Bell for 29¢. Tuesdays they were 19¢."

It is getting pricier all the time to have fun. I remember when the ice cream cones from Thirfty's cost a nickel. Three scoops of orange sherbet for 15¢. When my parents lived in California back in the sixties rides at Disneyland worked by a ticket system. Kiddie rides like King Arthur's Carrousel were an A ticket which cost a dime, while more popular roller coasters like the Matterhorn needed an E which set you back 75¢. At the end of the day we always had a surplus of A tickets left. Nowadays the price of a day at the Magic Kingdom is around a hundred bucks.

Having fun as a couple can be a small fortune too, especially if your babysitter is someone whose motivation is not strictly altruism. Added to the price of dinner and a movie and it can make you think twice about stepping out. Here is a list of ideas that are less than ten bucks, that are still rich with laughter.

I think I will try one next week for spring break.
