Marriage Moats Caring for Marriage

My mother used to read biographies. There was always a stack beside her bed with names I did and did not recognize.

Eleanor Roosevelt
Anne Frank
Jackie Kennedy Onassis
Betty Ford
Harry Truman

She was thirsty for the stories of people who bettered their corner of the world.

The other day I listened to a speech by someone I had never heard of, Dr. Benjamin Carson. It was half an hour long but I heard every word. When it was done I clicked replay.

But even that was not enough. I searched the web for more about his life, his scholarship fund, his rocky inner city Detroit childhood. He had an explosive temper, and kids taunted him as the stupidest kid in the whole school. His single mother had married a Baptist minister at age 13 and divorced him when she discovered his second family. But she was the driving force in Ben's childhood and when his motivation kicked in there was no holding him back.

Ben won a scholarship to Yale, and a prestigious invitation to work in Australia. Later he returned to John Hopkins where he became the youngest director of pediatric neurosurgery. He has received hundreds of awards and honors, and spoken to thousands of audiences.

And he has been married to Candy for over thirty years.

He will never know about me. But knowing about him has lifted me up. The rise from poverty, divorce and violence to one of saving lives and faithful marriage feeds me as much as the salad I had for dinner last night.
