Building trust takes time. Losing it happens quickly. Perhaps this aligns with other instances of construction, like houses. The home going up on my road has been in process for over a year, maybe two. But the ones in cinders on the west coast were gone in hours.
This hardly seems
fair, but then maybe fairness is irrelevant. When I work over time for a goal, its value to me increases. Growing a child beneath my heart gave me months to weave my affection around this new person. The stork idea never invoked such anticipation.
Landing a job after four or even seven years of college is a sure fire way to amplify its worth. Probably, sliding into a position with no effort is less of a triumph.
"You want me to be
corporate manager? I guess so."
Yet, jobs can disappear on a dime, before we even knew they were in jeopardy. Which tugs on the idea of trust. I wish I had a way to support people who have had the rug pulled out from under them. As it happens, I have on occasion been with friends for whom the rug did go away. Other people I care for have had to survive the sudden loss of someone they love, through death or divorce.
What leaves me with
my mouth agape, yet silent, is how these people can find their balance. Their capacity to trust again earns my respect.
Maybe the trust has a new magnet.
"Those who trust in the Divine are altogether different. Though concerned about the morrow, yet are they unconcerned, in that they are not anxious, let alone worried, when they give thought to the morrow. They remain even-tempered whether or not they realize desires, and they do
not grieve over loss; they are content with their lot. If they become wealthy they do not become infatuated with wealth; if they are promoted to important positions they do not consider themselves worthier than others. If they become poor they are not made miserable either; if lowly in status they do not feel downcast. They know that for those who trust in the Divine all things are moving towards an everlasting state of happiness, and that no matter what happens at any time to them, it
contributes to that state."
