The lemony leaves outside my window are so bright, I expect them to be warm to the touch. Their days are numbered, since rain is predicted, which has just enough pull to tug them from their branches. But for now they are dancing, and seem gloriously ignorant of an imminent fall.
I also know, but will not bother them with the news, that they will slide into the color of mud. Crunchy mud, but still a demotion from gold. Perhaps they will not be disappointed, having lived with abandon these months, first in green garb and now the color of sunshine.
I have
a thing or two to learn from leaves. And the trunk that bore them. They seem to hang on to contentment with more finesse than I often manage on a blustery day. Even clear ones, can be the occasion for discontent for me.
But today I remember. Remember that God is generous, and there are people I love. Today I will sing, and savor pie, and hug more people than I
deserve.
"Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has
made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations." Psalm 100
