Heroics are the stuff of myths. History, too draws a circle around those brave persons who step into danger for the safety of others.
In church the
minister had a small prison set up. Not ironclad, surely, in fact the bars wobbled. But the effect was to hold a clutch of people captive. When the minister asked for volunteers to be locked up I whispered to Ben to gauge his interest.
"No!" was his emphatic answer. He has memories of doors that did not open for him.
Later the call was for someone to free them, and Ben's hand shot up. He stepped forward and the minister, who is also his father, handed him a twenty from the offertory.
"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings
to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound." Isaiah 61
