I belong to a friendly group. It is called Heavenly Hand Me Downs, and exists for the sole purpose of shifting possessions. Almost every day someone posts a dress they no longer wear, or books they want to pass on. I have offered a slew of things this month in an effort to reduce clutter, and to thin out John's closet now that he has
thinned out. Since we are cutting back on carbs, I posted some perfectly good cereal and crackers, for the bargain price of a buck. It is satisfying both to buy and sell things that are better utilized in a new environment.
People seemed pleased to come pick out wooden elephants and turtles that John brought back from Africa twenty years ago. They are hand carved, and he
probably supported a local artist who is still carving.
I have been on the receiving end as well. Back when I was a costumer I raced around town for pieces that could end up on stage. Once I found a little llama rug for my daughter-in-law who has a soft spot for them.
The whole enterprise works because we trust each other.
I have noticed another kind of exchange. The intangibles, which we can on occasion find ourselves lacking, are probably available a few streets away. Encouragement, comfort, prayer, are all commodities that ebb and flow with the seasons. In truth people are given these gifts, if they are
brave enough to admit they need them. The prayer list I keep has names of those souls who are feeling depleted and have asked for shoring up.
It works because we trust each other.
