The other day I was at the local bakery with friends when a little boy came in with his mom. He was surprised to see me out of the context of his preschool classroom, and threw his arms around me for a hug. I was equally delighted to see him, and we talked for a bit about his light up shoes.
In retrospect I realized I had
not even said hello to his mother.
Walking down my road I saw a little girl on her way to school. She had on a new backpack, and her mother was pushing the baby in a stroller and holding her brother's hand.
"I hear you have started kindergarten!" She was pleased to confirm this news. She told me about her teacher, and her desk partner, and we each went on our way. Again I noticed that I had not greeted the rest of her
family.
Yet I don't imagine that their parents were offended. On the contrary, it seems to be a two for one situation. Be kind to my child and you are kind to me.
I think this is a reflection of how God operates.
"And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren you did it to Me.'" Matthew
