One of the surprises I tucked in my kids' Christmas stockings was sporks. Those are wooden utensils half way between a fork and a spoon that you can carry with you. It eliminates the need for disposables. I hope my children don't accidentally toss them as they hurry out of a cafe because, well, sporks are pricey. People are more mindful of waste, and make the effort to bring cloth grocery bags, and water thermoses in lieu of plastic. It is part of a larger effort to conserve our
planet and protect resources.
A friend commented about the story I told regarding prisoners being given a chance to train mustangs. He felt sad knowing that some people are considered disposable. Prisoners can be sidelined, and also addicts, or children who disappoint their parents. It is heartbreaking to see relationships that once were deeply valued, become worthless.
His musings stirred me. I am not so amnesiac as to have forgotten moments of despair when I wanted to give up on someone. I still do.
I marvel at the investment God makes in His children, not simply their miraculous body with an orchestra of interdependent organs but the intricacies of a mind and spirit. Surely they are of more worth than a spork.
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10
