Once upon a time there was a little boy who wanted a bow and arrows. His mother thought it was a good idea, and bought him a beginner's set for his next birthday. She set up the target in the basement.
The boy was eager to try, and hurried downstairs with his quiver. But the lighting in the basement was poor, and he had no idea whether his arrows landed anywhere near the bull's eye. Lacking feedback, the activity soon lost it's appeal. He dropped the bow on the floor and went back upstairs.
The end.
Last month included a holiday in which people try to hit the mark. Whether it was chocolate, or flowers, or a hand written card, many of us made the effort to express our affection to one another. But what happens when there is no response? I can recall times I gave a gift without hearing whether it was received. Of more significance is the realization that I do not always remember to thank the person who blessed me.
Bowling is an activity that makes a lot of noise when you succeed. Maybe I could remember that the next time I am gifted with a plate of warm food, or a generous comment.
