Exuberance Caring for Marriage

The other day I was singing in the preschool. For much of the autumn we could sing with abandon outside, unimpeded by masks, though the children were spaced apart. But in these colder months we are chased indoors, with half of our faces hidden. The teachers were wearing hats as well, since the window was open to increase ventilation. With just a few inches visible on the small faces of the students I felt but muted joy in being with them. As I sang, the mask kept slipping down, and my lenses fogged up. Both hands were glued to the strings and could not rescue my face. The linty cloth was making me cough.

It felt hard.

Then I noticed a girl in the back. She was dancing. Even with the impediments imposed on us, she felt jubilant with the music. As I watched her twirl, I wanted to be like her. She held no angst that I could see about the virus, or the rules. She embodied no fear about the longevity of these limitations. There were notes playing in her body and she would not keep still.
